In Japan, hinoki cypress has been used for centuries to build temples, shrines and deep wooden soaking tubs. The wood is pale and fine-grained, and it holds a scent that's clean, lemony and softly woody: the smell of hot water, steam and stillness. Hinoki Sanctuary starts there. Gin botanicals, bayberry and a hint of sage open the scent, crisp as a cold morning. Then comes the hinoki itself, calm and citrusy-sweet, over aged cedar with a thread of rosemary, dry and deep, like old floorboards warmed by years of sun. It's our most meditative scent.
